Shotguy VS The Arch-Kin!

  • Project Type: Personal

  • Time: June 2020

  • Made Using: GameMaker

  • Role: Solo Developer (Design, Art, Programming)

A quick ‘n dirty game about Hell’s favorite mascot throwing down against an enigmatic foe. Built to replicate LCD game design.

NOTE: This game uses sound assets from various Game & Watch games by Nintendo. They were used for immersion and authenticity and I do not claim to have created them.

Me playing the game. My high score is 887 points. Do you think you can beat it?

A fun exercise completed in an afernoon. It is inspired by Game & Watch games such as Vermin or Chef, wherein the game uses four lanes that the player has to manage, but overall, I wanted to make a game that wasn’t a complete clone of any pre-existing LCD game. I also kept the original aesthetic and limitations of those LCD games in mind but I also didn’t let it be a total limiting factor for making this game.

In terms of gameplay, you have three shells and you have to time your reloads. There is a “checkpoint” every 150 points wherein the screen is cleared, giving the player a breather. The first two “checkpoints” at 150 and 300 points increases the game’s difficulty, making enemies spawn and move faster, and the third “checkpoint” at 400 points completely clears your misses.

Good luck!

I made Shotguy just for this game, who was inspired by Vault Boy from the Fallout series of games. The idea was that Shotguy was a big mascot from a bygone era for Hell.

In terms of assets, all of the art and code was done by me in GameMaker, but most of the sounds were taken from gameplay videos of various Game & Watch games (Chef, Oil Panic, Octopus, and Bomb Sweeper). The sounds of the buttons being pressed were recorded by me playing with my own Game & Watch!
