Where’s Me Rum!?

  • Project Type: Academic

  • Time: September 2023

  • Made Using: Unity, Autodesk Maya

  • Role: Level Designer

A Unity project made from scratch to practice and showcase Environmental Storytelling skills. Play as a tavernkeep trying to find out what happened to their Rum.

Key Lessons Learned:

  • Props in Storytelling - Never compromise when it comes to props and environmental storytelling

  • Lighting - Lighting will never stop being a level designer’s best friend. Here, I used it to help tell a story alongside using it for guidance.

Where’s Me Rum?! was made from scratch in Unity using models made by myself in Maya. The geometry and props seen in the game were made by me. If Pizza Delivery was a showcase of my outdoor spatial design, Where’s Me Rum?! showcases how I can design indoor spaces.

Sounds used are from the BBC Sound Library alongside a player controller made for the class.

I didn’t put as much thought into the overall space as I would normally, since the environmental storytelling was the main focus and the level itself would be fairly linear. If anything, I wanted the big caves for the composition shots to really feel like you’re in a cavern near the ocean and the “in-between” spots to have some contrast by being smaller and having plenty of winding space.

Basically, I thought the tighter spaces in-between would help contrast and give more significance to the more-open areas where story reveals occurred.

Working on Where’s Me Rum?! helped me refine my skills in Maya. It also let me practice using contrasting space to make rooms distinct. Of course, I also learned about the usage of props to non-verbally tell a story; the title and premise gives you the baseline and you spend the game figuring out, well, where’s your rum?
